El Niño Is Expected This Year — Let’s Prepare Early
District 4,
El Niño is expected to bring the potential for heavier rain and flooding to San Diego this rainy season, and I’m urging you to prepare early.
We all remember what heavy rain and flooding did to families and neighborhoods across District 4 in 2024. That experience is a reminder of why preparation matters and why I want to make sure you have the information and resources you need before the rain arrives.
The City is preparing as well. Crews are continuing work to clean and maintain storm drains and channels in flood-prone areas.
Here in District 4, that work is already underway. Of the 67 channel segments identified for maintenance Citywide in Fiscal Year 2027, 17 are located in District 4, which represents 25% of all channel segments scheduled for maintenance across San Diego. In July alone, seven District 4 channel segments totaling 2.22 miles were maintained. The City prioritized this year’s work based on flood risk, impacts from the January 2024 storms, improvements to channel capacity, and previous maintenance efforts.

Here are a few things you can do now:
- Know your flood risk. Flooding can happen even outside designated flood zones.
- Create an emergency plan with your family and know your evacuation routes.
- Sign up for emergency alerts at AlertSanDiego.org.
- Protect important documents and store them somewhere you can access them quickly.
- Clear gutters and drains around your property.
- If your property is prone to flooding, consider preparing with sandbags.
- During a storm, never drive or walk through flooded areas.
- Build an emergency kit with enough supplies for at least three days.
